Not able to crack your dream job even after sending your resume for the hundredth time? Getting rejected by the recruiters? Not receiving any interview calls?

Then, it means you need to rethink what you are doing wrong. You might be oblivious to what might be the reason.

Being unemployed can often lead to an emotional breakdown every time a recruiter rejects you or your resume saying ‘Good luck next time or we will call you’ without any appropriate explanations. Even though you are sure your resume fits the job description, it might be infuriating when you are not aware of where you are making the mistake.

Your best chance to stand out from the rest of the applicants is if you have a creative resume. If you can impress the recruiters with your resume, half the job is done. The recruiters discard unrelated resumes, to give the rest of the applicants a chance to present themselves in the interviews.

To make it easy, here are a few points to consider while preparing a resume.

Typographical error– Though typos will not affect your applications, it represents your lack of diligence and terrible formatting skills. Sometimes the recruiters will reject your resume the moment they notice a spelling mistake or any typos.

Length of the resume– It is a standard format to have a one or two pages resume and not more than that, with all the relevant experiences. The recruiter skims through the resume for a few minutes before they decide to go through it or reject it. It is better to have a simple, and concise resume for you to be considered.

Formatting– While formatting a resume, it is always our intention to make it unique to impress potential employers. The font can be Times New Roman or Arial. The font size can be 14 for the heading and 12 for the subheadings and the content. The headings and subheadings can be bold, italic, and underlined to stand out or to highlight the details. Also, ensure there is a certain line space between each line in the resume so that the resume does not look crammed.

ATS Friendly Resume– Recruiters often use ATS (Application Tracking System) during the hiring process, to collect, sort, scan and rank the applications accordingly. It scans for the specific keywords related to the skills, education, or requirements of the job and sorts out the resumes which need to be passed along. This way, they can evaluate those candidates who are a match to the requirements faster. For the ATS, the resume formats which are acceptable are Word documents or pdf.

Grammatical errors– You must proofread your resume before you submit your application as grammatical errors might land your resume in the trash. A resume without grammatical errors shows that you are a competent person. It shows that you are coordinated and makes you stand out from the other candidates.

Not updating the resume– Relevant experiences must be updated. It gives the recruiter an idea about your previous job roles and responsibilities. It helps them to analyze you based on your previous experiences. An outdated resume would give the wrong impression that you have not been employed for a long time or you could even miss being the potential fit.

Irrelevant work experience– If the work experience on your resume does not fit the specific job you are applying for, it would create a disadvantage for you. It is always better to include relevant work experience tailored to fit the specific job requirements.

Not providing sufficient detail– All the relevant information about your previous experiences, accomplishments, and contact details must be included in the resume. Sometimes it is okay to omit the details which are irrelevant to the job you are applying for.

Skills not relevant to the job– It is necessary to ensure that you do not include any skills which do not match the job description. In a resume, you must focus on the space as it is limited. So only show what is necessary or suitable for the job.

Unrelated personal information– Often you include personal details which are not necessary like marital status, number of children, religious views, blood group, etc. These are irrelevant. The only personal information the recruiters need is your name, email address, contact number, and address. Also, it is acceptable to add the online platform address of LinkedIn, personal websites, online portfolios, or any other blog pages when you are applying for any creative positions like digital marketing, photography etc.

Poorly written summary– Poorly written summary will land your resume in trouble and the recruiter will not be impressed. It is your professional statement. It describes your relevant experiences, skills, and your accomplishments. The purpose of your summary should be to convince the recruiter that you are the best fit for the job. It should be short, within 3 to 5 sentences and it should do the job. The impression you make in the summary will want the recruiter go through your resume in detail.
